Historical World in Flames
WiFH stands for WiF Historical, a set of house rules, modifications, optional rules, and add-ons to the World in Flames game designed to give the game a more historic, realistic feel. The WiF game as it is published is purposefully designed to be balanced in the sense that the Axis and various minor players in the war are given a better chance of succeeding than they did historically.

It has been our experience that, under most conditions, WiF favours the Axis. Italy is far too strong in WiF as compared to history, mainly to allow an Italian player a chance to shine. Furthermore, it is very difficult for the Allies to realize historical gains in the late war, as the counter density and other factors serve to allow Germany to resistthe encroaching Allied advances far beyond thier historical capability.

WiFH seeks to redress these issues, by ramping up the capabilities of the Allies in the late war. Once the US and Russian war machines are in place and fully on the field, there is little the Axis can do to thwart them.

What then of the Axis players? WiFH also seeks to provide new victory conditions that will both encourage the Axis to go for broke and reward them for holding out longer than historical without nullifying the Allied overwhelming superiority at the end of the war.

WiFH is essentially composed of six components:

Chorus of Nations
This is a full blown political system add-on for WiF. It allows minor nations to be manipulated politically, and provides rewards and penalties for military actions as they relate to the various minor nations. The system has been designed specifically to try to reflect the realities of the political landscape from 1939-1945 and draws on historical results for its baseline. Nevertheless, the system is also designed to allow flexibility and to allow both sides to attempt to influence new minors or minors in ways that vary from history. A specific feature of the system is that political influence is gradual and there are few, if any, opportunities for "surprise" alliances that unbalance or ruin the game in mid-stride.  [MORE]

Revised US Entry System
The revised USE system for WiF seeks to better reflect the US' status before it entered the war, as well as allow the US to field a force more comparable with its historical forces both at its entry into the war and later, when she fully geared up. The system allows the US to gear up much earlier than in WiF, but is severely restricted in the types of units she can construct early in the game. This generally results in a much larger Navy. The chart is designed to be integrated with Chorus of Nations, but can also be used on a stand-alone basis. [MORE]

Revised Sub Warfare System
The revised Sub Warfare system seeks to better reflect the realities of the Battle of the Atlantic on a WiF scale. Specifically, it seeks to level out the strategic effects of sub commerce raiding, seeks to force the CW to choose between allocating ships to ASW duty and allocating them to force projection tasks, and seeks to reflect the dramatic turn around in the fortunes of the Battle of the Atlantic as Allied air gaps decreased and technological advances came on line. The net intended result is to make subs more effective than in WiF before 1942 and less effective after 1942. [MORE]

Victory Conditions
The revised victory conditions seek to reflect the historical outcomes likely in WiFH while still encouraging the Axis to go for broke. Hitler and Japan both went into the war with nothing short of victory in mind. Their actions did not, initially, reflect a "hold onto my home country as long as possible" mentality. A sitzkrieg strategy was absolutely out of the question for both major powers. These revised victory conditions seek to essentially measure the high water mark of the Axis advance and couple that with their stamina in resisting the Allied onslaught. [MORE]

House Rules
An assortment of new rules intended to reduce Axis production to historical levels, plus clarifications and interpretations that give the game a more realistic feel. No more ground support at night! Grrr.... [MORE]

Options Manifest
This is a roster of optional rules from WiFFE and provides a checklist of which rules are in play with WiFH and which are not. This will be published soon.
