Dax Gren was born in the Kingdom of Vilgum. His parents were invested in the gentry of Lower Vilg, at a time when that nation was divided and in the throes of a Civil War. His father was, unbeknownst to his family, a spymaster for the King Conoscer of the Loyalist families, used for the most dangerous missions against the Appeasers. On a mission into the palace of the Appeasers, he was captured, interrogated, tortured, and slain. It was only then that Dax, a young child, and his mother learned of their father's true avocation.
During the War of the Gem, Dax and his mother fled south to Iligor to try to stay behind the front lines. Nonetheless, they both had to go into hiding during the March on Mordasht, when the forces of the Deceiver were allowed to run rampant through the southlands. After the war, Dax and his mother wandered from place to place, trying to avoid disease and starvation. Eventually, they made the arduous journey to Slumber, aided by the ex-Loyalists in Vilgum who were now attempting to consolidate their kingdom and felt a debt of loyalty to Dax' father.
In Slumber, the two thrived, settling in Morg's Canton. Dax' mother took work as a seamstress, and Dax was quickly identified as a very bright young lad and slated to enter a college of magic in either Queequeg's Canton or Eracuss' Canton. However, Canaris also took note of the son, for he had travelled recently to Vilgum and had heard tales of Dax' father and had often wondered what happened to the child. Canaris determined that the lad would make a good candidate for the Myconid Brew and the School of Psionics. However, the brew could be dangerous, and Dax' mother refused.
In 5520, Dax' mother died. Dax now determined to enter the School and brave the draught. He took the mind-expanding potion and survived, then entering the tutelage of the School. There he eventually gravitated towards the Shapers and graduated with excellent marks. By this time, Dax was very interested in learning about his father. He returned to Vilgum and learned all he could about the legendary spymaster. These tales filled Dax' head and he determined that, with his psionic powers, he could follow in his father's footsteps and, in fact, improve upon them. And so he re-invented himself as a benign assassin and spy for hire. As such, Dax would only take jobs and missions that benefited the general weal. He became known as the Crystal Assassin, because of the dark red crystal mask he wore. He would slay tyrants, bandit lords, criminals and dark cultists, and would ofen spy on their minions.
Dax' last job was supposed to be an ordinary one. The job was supposed to be a simple death of a fop who had purportedly raped powerful merchant's daughter. As it turned out he killed a high noble of the Duchy of Imtorr. Not expecting the enormous security around the target Dax barely escaped with his life.
His contractor for that job, a half-orc named Chustin, disappeared after giving Dax the job. Knowing that he had been misled into an assassination that he never would have taken normally, Dax determined to find out Chustin's true nature. He found out that Chustin was part of a major crime syndicate, so Dax has been trying to make a contact with the syndicate and inquiring as to Chustin's whereabouts. Dax has kept the red crystal mask as a good luck piece, but does not wear it. The sister of the noble he killed has sworn vengeance for her brother's death.
After that time, Dax gave up his assassin and spymaster profession and instead settled back in Slumber in order to indulge his aristic flair, becoming a sculptor and eventually parleying his talent and arcane knowlegde into crafting the bodies of golems and constructs for wealthy mages. He has also travelled the planes, as an artist for hire to various netherbeings as well as a merchant and guide.
In the intervening years Dax has focused on creating a following for his artistic creations and selling his wares at large high-end gatherings. He has won tremendous favor in upper class circles through his charisma and artistic skill, and eventually came to the notice of King Morg, who wanted him to sculpt a diorama illustrating the Heroes' recent defeat of an arcanaloth foe. During a customary divination background check on Dax, his talents and the talents of his father were divulged. Morg approached the artist and explained his need for a spymaster and asked that Dax join his service as his spymaster. At first Dax was reluctant, not wanting to be duped again and slay an innocent, but Morg eventually convinced him. In 25 N.S. he was formally hired by the Canton.
